I take a lot of reference photos, and sometimes when I go over them, I miss some great expressions on the first pass. “Too weird,” I will think, or just find something uninspiring. And then I’ll go back a couple months later and look again, and love that same photo.

This horse pair I have painted before, in different poses, different colors. I bet that colt is 3 years old now. I go by the farm every spring to see if there are new colts, and it seems like every second to third year there are gangly legged foals beside their mamas.
